Parts TherapyArchetypal Parts Imagery is a theory, using the idea of ancestral memory, to help resolve conflicts in the psyche. Archetypal Parts Imagery is based on the origins of the human species and how we were subdivided into three main categories, known as Warrior, Settler and Nomad. When the first settlements were formed one hundred thousand years ago, the Settlers were much at home, farming crops and livestock within the community. For the more aggressive tribes, the Warriors, they could now move in and take over, exploiting the weaker Settler. For some, this fighting would have been too much so they adopted their instinctive nomadic urges and kept on the move, thus becoming the Nomads. This ancestral memory is not actual events but an instinct. These three parts exist within us today, usually with a dominant personality, which rules our behavioural pattern. Broadly speaking the characteristics of these three main personality groups are: Warrior: Resolute: High levels of determination. Settler: Sociable: Get on well with almost everybody. Nomad: Restless: Must always have something going on. Conflicts can already exist within us if we are brought up by parents of a different personality, who teach us to behave in a way we come to believe is correct, although conflicts with our natural inherited instincts. This can result in unfulfilled or discharged urges and/or erroneous beliefs about ourselves; both creating anxiety. We have an unquestioned acceptance of information about self, given to us in our formative years by somebody else. Our first experiences of life are our yardstick, whether good or bad. At birth our logical left brain is like a sponge, so whatever we have been taught can become part of our fundamental belief system hence subconsciously becoming normal. Archetypal Parts Imagery uses the three parts through visualisation techniques to help resolve these inner conflicts and erroneous self beliefs. The client will develop archetypes of each, thus discovering which part 'owns' the problem and allowing the three to find a compromise to produce beneficial change. By visualising positive archetypes, the client can access these traits, which have perhaps prevented them from doing certain things in the past.
