What exactly is stress?
Stress is the psychological response by an individual when the demands
placed on that person becomes too much for them to cope.
Stress could be seen as the uncomfortable gap between how we would like our
life to be and how it actually is.
Originally stress was used by the body to help us cope with danger. If
we attempt to override that instinctive response, we are placed at risk and
when the subconscious thinks we are being threatened, the flight or fight
response is employed, i.e. we stand and fight or run away.
Why do we have stress?
Examples of our modern day stresses include increased workload, a sensation
of being pulled in two or more directions, relationship difficulties, guilt
and excessively high expectations of self.
Fear is sometimes the source of all of these anxieties: the fear of looking
stupid, loss of integrity, inadequacy, punishment and rejection. These
stresses can produce mind related symptoms, including aggression,
depression, emotional problems, anxiety, IBS (Irritable Bowels Syndrome),
panic attacks, insomnia and speech problems.
How can therapy help?
Stress Management Therapy uses a variety of techniques to help to combat
these feelings, promoting calm and relaxation within the individual.
